Stephen E. Bachand

Education:
I'm guessing he's educated, just not sure where.

History:
30 years with Landover, Md.,-based Hechinger's. Stephen E. Bachand spent more than 20 years overseeing the company's back offices -- its finances, computers, warehouses and such.

Salary:
$900,000, Bonus $1,350,000

Current Problem:
Although the Home Depot and Wal-Mart Stores Inc. were a threat back in 1993, Canadian Tire is now not only doing well, it is planning to speed up its expansion of stores in Canada.

Business As Usual:
"Toronto, Ontario, February 4, 1999 Canadian Tire Corporation, Limited today reported 1998 (fiscal year 52 weeks) consolidated net earnings per share of $2.09, up 17.1 percent from $1.79 earned in 1997 (fiscal year 53 weeks). Consolidated earnings before taxes were up 19.2 percent from $209.5 million in 1997 to $249.7 million in 1998. After-tax consolidated net earnings increased 12.4 percent from $148.6 million to $167.0 million." (from http://www.canadiantire.ca/CTenglish/4qtr.html)

"Canadian Tire Petroleum is the country's largest independent retailer of gasoline, with 195 outlets. With 430 Canadian Tire Associate Stores serving communities nationwide, Canadian Tire Corporation, Limited and the Associate Dealers together employ 35,000 Canadians."
